Sexiest hair of the summer!

 Summer Lovin!
Look and feel sexy this summer by rockin' one of my signature styles!

Let me introduce you to my beautiful client  Sommer! This fabulous lady is one of the reasons I love what I do. She allows me to be creative and have fun with her hair. I have created this look by combining some of my favorite trends of the year.

Take your favorite hair color trend and combine it with your favorite cut and style to create your signature look! You can even combine a few colors to enhance depth and add contrast which always looks more natural.

Golden beige tones are very popular this year. They can vary in level of darkness or lightness depending on your skin tone and base color. They can be mixed with some red tones to add warmth for those who like a touch of auburn.

For Sommer, I have combined the very popular 'ombre' technique with some painted on highlights starting half an inch away from her roots. This combo gives the illusion of roots without looking like you need a touch up immediately. I love the 'ombre' look but i find that it looks better if you have some painted on pieces coming from the roots as well for more of a classy yet sexy look.

Loose waves are the way to go this summer. With the right haircut, you can just scrunch up your hair using cream based products and let your hair dry naturally for an effortless look.
For Sommers' haircut, I did lots of layers while maintaining the fullness around the length and added some face framing layers to open up her cheekbones while enhancing her features.
Have fun with your hair by changing up your style. Choose from differnt styles trending from behemian to glamorous and sexy sleek.
For a more finished look, use a large curling iron or some hot rollers to create smooth loose waves.

Don't miss out on my earlier blog post on Kim Kardashian style blow-dry at home. It will take you step by step through creating a voluminous and sexy blow out.

I would like to thank Sommer for doing me proud by taking her hair to the full potential and making it look so amazing. Have fun and be playful with your hair ladies. I believe that although hair is the exterior, it reflects who you are on the inside. Be sexy and confident and love your hair!

Top 3 Summer Red Carpet Hair Trends!

This summer has been all about beach-y, sun kissed waves and sleek styles. These popular summer trends even made it through to the red carpet at the MTV movie awards.

Selena Gomez shows off a classic half up,  yet casual do. To get this look, curl your hair with a one and a half inch curling iron to create loose waves. Tease the crown area for some volume and height and accessorize by using a small clip or hair pin to hold the top portion in place. Leave the bangs or side layers out to frame the face. This effortless style looks amazing with smokey eyes and nude lips.

Blake Lively went for a sleek and straight style . Who would have thought a casual ponytail can look so sexy and put together. This is my favorite hairstyle for any occasion. I love the fact that you can dress it up or wear it casual and still look sophisticated and fresh. Get this look in 3 easy steps. Start with flat ironing your hair to smooth out any frizz you may have and use a hairband to create a tight ponytail. Finally, finish with some hairspray around your hairline to tame fly-aways.

Ombre, Ombre, Ombre!!! Leighton Meester rocks this popular hair color trend. Sun-kissed hair looks effortless and chic at the same time. From the beach to the red carpet! Get this low maintenance look by curling your hair with a flat iron (instead of a a curling iron) and run your fingers through it to get a undone yet finished style.

Hope you enjoyed my top 3 red carpet hair trends and tips! Try to creating these simple and sexy looks at home!

Hair Color Crash Course: What You Should Know Before Going to the Salon

Many people enter the salon with a preconceived notion that anything is possible with color. There are women who are the darkest dark brown wanting to be bleached blonde or fiery redheads wanting to look like Gwen Stefani. Although we may be magical and awesome in every way, miracles are limited. When coloring one’s hair, there are rules we have to follow while factoring in a person’s actual hair type, the chemical reaction that may occur on the hair, and what the limitations are for that hair texture.

Let’s start with rule #1: Color does not lift color. This means that if you have a pre-existing hair color (especially with darker hair) and you want to go lighter than what it already is, the hair stylist cannot throw a lighter color on top of it and have it turn light brown or blonde. The existing color molecules have been deposited into your hair cuticles and cannot be lifted out by throwing a color on top of it. That’s why many people are disappointed after slathering some cream on their head from a box color that they pick up at the store; they end up with hot roots! This is the result of putting a lighter color over their virgin roots AND already colored mid-lengths. The chemical has only lifted from the virgin hair, not the pre-existing color. This brings us to….

Rule #2: Only a lightener (bleach) or a color remover will take out the pre-existing color. “That sounds fantastic! We can just use that and everything will be perfect, right?” Well, not exactly. Although the concept sounds simple, there are a few things to factor in. One is the condition of the hair. If the hair quality is already questionable, the hair stylist should not compromise the integrity of the hair for whatever reason, even if the task at hand is possible. No color is worth the hair breaking, splitting, or falling on the floor. Another issue to factor in is how much color removal is required in the process. If a person has extremely dark hair, the lightener may not remove enough. This means that the hair may require several processes of lightening, which can result in severely damaged hair although the hair started out healthy. Also, another reality to consider is that some hair just isn’t meant to be lightened that much. Darker, courser hair naturally has red and orange undertones, meaning it will be 2 to 3 times as hard to achieve a lighter color compared to people who have lighter colored, finer hair. At this point, the stylist and client should discuss if this process is worth it. How badly do you want blonde hair? Is there an alternative?

Rule #3: Lighteners should never overlap. This rule also applies to a blonde who has a full head of highlights and want to be blonder. When lighteners are overlapped, it causes the hair shaft to become weak, which leads to breakage. This is the result when a stylist highlights over existing highlights, or overlaps on a bleach re-touch. A good example is Christina Aguilera’s hair; there is no way that a person can be that bleached blonde and not have breakage. She has a ton. So when a client asks to de-colorize their hair several times, the stylist will be hesitant because they don’t want to be responsible for any extreme damage that can happen. You can achieve a certain color, but you will have very poor hair quality.

Rule #4: Going darker is sometimes just as difficult. When a person has been super blonde for a very long time, the cuticles of the hair are completely opened, which is one reason why it’s difficult for lighter hair to retain moisture and nutrients. That being said, it will be very difficult for a blonde to hold a darker hair color without re-pigmenting. Re-pigmenting is when the stylist adds back all the color pigments that are lost during lightening or color-extracting. For example, when you have dark hair, all the reds, oranges, and coppers have been removed in order to achieve the beautiful golden blonde. In reverse, when you are coloring the hair back to dark, you need to re-pigment all the colors you’ve lost (reds, oranges, coppers). It's a strange process since everyone knows red is a difficult color to remove.  At the same time, it is also difficult to put back.  So when a lighter hair client asks to go darker, but wants to keep the tones ashy, this is virtually impossible because the hair will not hold the color very well. Not only will the color not hold, but it will not be vibrant and shiny because the warm color molecules are missing. In fact, if you are bleached blonde and you ask for an ash tone brown, your hair WILL turn green. This is often what happens when someone tries to use box color at home. Everyone has heard of these horror stories and I'm here to educate you so that it never happens! Which brings us to….

Rule #5: Never ever compromise the integrity of your hair just because you think the color will look good. I cannot repeat this enough! All these rules will apply whether you ask one hair stylist or a hundred. The reason for color correction being so expensive is because the stylist has to fix and reverse much of the damage that was done previously and it can take hours on end, if not several salon visits, just to get your hair back to the way it was beforehand. The next time you decide on a new look, take all these issues into consideration because it will save you a lot of time and definitely a lot of money. Happy hair + Happy people = Happy Day!

Darker hair in the summertime! Is there a rule against it???

Do you ever wonder how you would look with darker hair?
Why not try it during the summer and stand out next to all the blondes!

Do blondes really have more fun? And what's up with the rule that you can't color your hair darker during the summer? There is no rule ladies, so do what makes you happy because brunettes can have just as much fun!

There are things to consider when deciding to go darker, especially during the summertime. Start with deciding how dark you really want to go. If you just want a mini makeover, you can go a few shades darker by using a semi-permanent color. This will last a few weeks while gradually fading to your old color. I suggest using a semi-permanent color when going darker for anyone with highlighted hair who just wants a few lighter pieces to still show.
In this photo of  Gisele Bundchen, you can see some hues of lighter brown shades which are the highlighted pieces coming through, mostly through the ends. This will fade gradually in a couple of weeks so it is a temporary change without making any commitments.
Dark brown or black hair can also be very fun during the summer. In this photo, I had colored my hair using permanent color with low ammonia. I had to use permanent color so that it would cover my previous highlights and fade less frequently. If you have natural hair and want to go as dark as I did, I suggest using a semi-permanent the first time to make sure it is exactly what you want. When coloring your hair, always try to do the least damaging option especially during the summer when hair can be more fragile. Hope this helps motivate those of you who want to go dark but had doubts about the rule against it!

To Be or Not To Be……Voluminous? Hair Brushes 101

Most consumers, when picking out styling products, get overwhelmed because no one explains to them what to buy and why. One tool that always troubles my clients is the hair brush. When people ask me, “How do I get more volume?”, “How do I get less volume?”, or “How do I get my hair to look like yours?” I always respond by asking them, “What kind of hair brush do you use?” 9 out of 10 times, people are using the wrong brushes. But no worries, I am here to help you!

First off, there are different brush shapes: round, flat, curved, just to name a few. Each shape determines the end result. Round brushes will create more volume, while flat brushes will form a smooth and contoured look. If you want that sexy Victoria’s Secret Angel blowout, you will want to use a round brush. If you want a Jennifer Aniston sleek sophisticated look, use the paddle brush. Also, paddle brushes work great to rid you of annoying cowlicks. When wet, use your paddle or vent brush to blow your cowlick piece back and forth, using airflow and constant movement to create neutral placement of your hairline. This technique is a winner for everyone!

Once you decide the shape, then you have to choose the brush material. Some brushes are made with natural boar bristle and cork. Other brushes are made with rubber, metal, or plastic. The natural bristles are great for taming wild and unruly hair while adding shine. The bristle will pull the hair taut while you blow dry so that the hair can be as smooth as possible without frizz. If you choose to use a metal brush with plastic bristles, this tool will provide you with max volume while also smoothing. The hair types that will benefit the most from this brush are super fine or straight and limp hair. The holes in the brush circulate air flow while drying, which help create more volume by expanding your hair cuticles. So if you’re looking for volume and movement, stick with the round metal brushes. If sleek is your middle name, then I would recommend using a round boar bristle or a flat paddle brush.

Now here is the million dollar question: “Why does my hair still look so flat when I’m using the largest round brush possible?” Here is where we learn about brush size and how it affects volume. Many people assume that the larger the brush, the more volume it produces. This is actually wrong. If you want more curl or more volume, you have to use a smaller brush because the circumference size is what creates the fuller body. A bigger size brush will just give you slight body with a slight bounce. Think of it in terms of hair rollers; if you use bigger rollers, the hair will be loose and wavy. If you use smaller rollers, the hair will be tightly curled and more voluminous.

Hopefully, this helps put everything into perspective so that the next time you go brush shopping, you’ll know exactly what your hair needs. Happy hair means…Happy Day! -Parlour girl Christine

Boho-Chic Hair for the Summer!

As summer is approaching, everyone is still on the hunt for that perfect hair style or color.  However, most people are not willing to commit to lighter highlights or shorter cuts, whether due to financial drawbacks, or just lack of time.  In fact, many are just scared to make a drastic change in fear of not liking it or not being able to change it back.

Ladies, the goods news is: hair accessories are back in and HOT for the season.  For those who want to spice up their hair without actually changing their cut or color, this is a great option.  The Bohemian Chic style has been an ongoing trend for the past few years and it’s still going strong.  Many celebrity fashionistas, such as Blake Lively and Lauren Conrad, are still rocking the tiny side braids or thin head bands.

For a bolder look, try the turban-like hair bands seen on Nicole Richie and Misha Barton.  It’s a simple way to look naturally gypsy with minimum effort, if that is your style.
Not a big fan of wearing something on your head?  Then you might want to try the newest hair trend: hair feathers!  Hair feathers are a fresh new trend for the spring/summer and guaranteed to please!  They come in many colors and sizes, certain to turn heads everywhere.

These feathers are great for low maintenance clients so if you’re a no fuss kind of gal, give these a try.  They are completely natural and can be curled, flat-ironed, dried and styled like the rest of your hair. It is attached with a metal crimping bead and stays in until they’re removed. You can even find feather clip-in pieces if you only want to change things up for a day.  This accessory is just enough to add some pop to your look, but very affordable and quick.  Set up a consultation with your stylist to pick out the colors and styles that compliment your hair.  With something this easy and fun, it’s a no-brainer!
